Easy Installation Guide: Dual Boot Windows Vista and MAC OS X 10.5 .. Real quick and fool proof

Things you need
- Desktop/Laptop running Windows Vista. (May run with XP..but not tested.)
- iATKOS v1.0 DVD image available from any popular torrent site or google it.(Approx size 2.16 GB)
- Windows Vista boot DVD
- Optical DVD drive
Before you start…..
- InstallWindows OS on your C drive. (primary partition 1)
- Create an empty primary partition to use for OS X (Say Partition 2)
Steps : (Follow these steps exactly..in the same order..)
- Right click on My Computer and Click on Manage. Select Disk Management. Now Create a new Volume for OSX by shrinking an existing volume. You need atleast 5GB of space and the new volume should show up as Unallocated.
- Make sure that the partition shows up as Unallocated, else repeat the previous step.
- Now restart the machine and boot into the Leopard DVD that you burned using the iATKOS v1.0 DVD Image.
- Press F8 as the countdown begins and type -v at the prompt and hit enter.
- You should see scrolling text on the screen now. If it stops anywhere then drop a comment and I’ll try to help you out.
- After a while you should be looking at the Leopard Installer. Follow the instructions on Screen.
- Once the Loading Bar vanishes Select Utilities -> Disk Utility .
- Select the Volume you created previously and format it as MAC OSX Journaled Extended. Once the formatting is done the volume is ready for installation.
- Now Close Disk Utility and Select Utilities -> Darwin Boot. Type Y at the prompt.
- At the prompt when it asks for the Disk Number enter 0. For the Partition Number if your Leopard Partition is 2nd on the disk, then enter 2 and so on.
- Accept the following prompts and you should see a success prompt saying that so many block of data were written successfully.
- Now get back to the Leopard Install Screen. Choose the partition that you made in the beginning and follow the instructions on screen.
Please don’t select any patches etc during the installation, this is normally the reason for most failed installations. Just the plain install would do.
- Once the Install is done, reboot with the DVD in the drive. Press F8 at Darwin Boot Loader and type -s and press enter.
- Execute the following commands :
fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0
flag 1
quit
reboot
- Now before the PC restarts remove the DVD. At this point you should be able to boot into Vista normally.
Note: If you are unable to log into windows, because there is an error which says “winload.exe” corrupted.! Relax. Just insert the Windows VISTA boot DVD into the drive and restart. Click on “Repair computer” once you are inside the DVD and it will automatically detect if a problem exists and suggest “Repair and Restart”. Press the same, and remove the DVD once the PC is about to restart. You should now be able to log in to vista without any problem.
- Now that we have almost everything running fine, lets proceed with the dual boot setup.
- Boot into Vista. Copy the chain0 file from the Leopard DVD to C:
- Open the “Command prompt” with “Elevated Admin” privileges from the Start Menu.
- Type the following into the prompt
bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Mac OS X”
bcdedit /enum active
bcdedit /set {GUID} PATH \chain0
In the first command type {current} as it is, literally..nothing else..just {current} with the brackets. In the 3rd command however, replace the {GUID} with the alphanumeric GUID you see in the enumerated list under MAC OS X. You can see this list on your terminal as soon as you type the 2nd command above.
- Close the Command Prompt and Restart Vista.
- You Should now be looking at a screen with two options to boot into Mac OSX or Vista.
- Select Mac OSX to see if you can boot into it. You should see the familiar Darwin boot Loading screen with the timer going down. If you dont do anything, then it counts to zero and again shows the menu screen with Vista and MAC OSX options. Dont panic!
Again select MAC OS X, and now as the timer counts down, Press F8. You would see a list of partitions on your disk with their names. Select the partition with MAC OSX installed by using up/down arrows and press ENTER.
- Voila!! your Mac should be booting up as you read this..
See it was that simple. No more HFS+ and Blinking Cursor errors. Just follow this guide step by step and you should be able to dual boot Windows Vista and Leopard in no time. If you have any questions just drop in a comment, I’ll reply at the earliest.

Thanks for the guide, but after doing this I get a “Chain booting error” when selecting Mac OS X… I have no problem booting Vista from my D partition and Windows XP from my C partition… Do I have to do a different BCDEDIT setting? Hope you can help!

when i boot from DVD, i only get as far as an apple logo with spinning wheel at the bottom, the after 1 minute, a small image of a circle with a cross pops up at top and i have waited for hours.

I had issues too – the bootloader wouldn’t stay open. Try adding this:
bcdedit /timeout 8
To give you time to pick MACOSX instead of Windows.
Other thing is, make sure you put in the GUID for that partition, not your Windows one.

my problem is there is no option for the Darwin boot loader in the utilities dropdown menu.. I can select the Darwin boot loader in the customized section of the install but then there is no option to enetr any disk or partition number.. I have tried this install which proceeds successfully but then os x will not load..and nor will vista..

After I hit F8 and enter -v, it does start scrolling text, it says something about loading hfs files, but on the third one it just reverts to the “press any key to install Darwin/OSx86” screen. It just does this forever. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have tried install leopard on my XPS M1330 laptop
but when it hits IOAPIC: Version 0x20 vectors 0:23 it stalls
It does tell me MAC Framework Successfully initialised.
Laptop had Intel 2 Duo Core
2 GB Ram
Integrated Webcam and Biometric finger print
250 GB of which 50are unallocated for Leopard to use.

After I enter the -v option, I do see scrolling text and after the second line of “loading HFS+ /System/Library/Extentions.mkext” is posted my machine reboots.

had raid zero on it but thought it was the prob so removed it

i’ve figured it out with the boot up.i was able to boot to mac but i ended up having a grey screen with an apple logo…stuck for a couple of mins…the thing with the spinning wheel has already stopped…any work arounds?

i tried doing this and did everything the guide said and made sure i got iatkos v1.0i. so i followed the guide and installed it and i noticed 2 problems. Everything went fine till i did the command prompt where i do “bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Mac OS X”

when i did this it didn’t give me a GUID number under Mac OS X. instead there were 2 different GUIDS and i picked the one that was most likely the Mac OS X one, which i got it right. so i finished this. anyways i got almost everything working. the dual boot screen comes up too and shows vista and mac os X. i tried to boot into Mac OS X though and it gave me “chain booting error”. i don’t know what to do to get mac os X working. i’m pretty sure i got everything right in following the guide. i’ve done this about 3 times over(wiping the partition out each time before trying again though) and i always get “chain booting error”. What should i do to get OS X up and running? Oh, and i deleted the OS X partition for now, and took it out of the booting entry so my computer just boots into vista now. so whenever i get info on how to get mac OS X to work with the dual boot, then i’ll install it again. any help?

just thought i’d tell you… i had that happen before once too. You probably entered the windows GUID number when you were setting up the dual boot. just go into the command prompt and do “bcdedit” and it should list what you have. if you have 2 of the same GUID then enter “bcdedit /delete {GUID}” (GUID being the number). You might need to delete the OS X partition first to get your windows boot loader to just boot into vista. Then reinstall mac os X like you did before, and when it comes to setting up the dual boot setup, do like you did before except put in the Mac OS X GUID. when you restart there should be 2 options… 1 to boot into windows, the other to boot into OS X. good luck getting OS X to boot though. i did like the guide said and i’m getting “chain booting error”. something to do with vista boot loader not recognizing OS X as a bootable partition i think. i don’t know what to do about that though

Yes I was using iATKOS v1.0 on DVD. I have follow everything exactly as what it said above till the point to entering the OS installment, it kept restart automatically after I type in “-V”. The DVD is works like I pressed ‘F8’ when it start 8 seconds counting. I have also tried just press ‘enter’ to install instead press ‘F8’ and it just restarts automatically without completed anything… Thanks for the quick response!

Hi! I installed ToH 10.5 Leo and it worked. It doesn’t have Darwin boot under utilities so I didn’t install it. When I boot my PC I choose Mac …. and the screen becomes black, after a few seconds it returns to the main boot screen. Where is my problem, please?

First off, thanks for the great guide!
That having been said, I am a little stuck. I finally properly shrunk my drive using the Vista utility, and have a 9.5 gig partition unallocated. Unfortunately, this partition doesn’t show up in the Mac OS X disc utility. I have partition 1 (the restore partition for my computer) partition 2 (the main vista partition) and then nothing. Each has the correct size (after the unallocated partition was created) but I can’t see the unallocated partition! Any suggestions?

your step by step worked just fine for my hp laptop. But v1.0 doesn´t run very well on my dv9730. it runs very jumpy. I was wondering if you know how to do this same thing with iatkos v2.0. I have tried following the same instructions for v2.0 but it doesn´t work. I get kernal panic while its booting up in the grey screen with the apple logo. Maybe the steps would have to be different. i already have a dual boot of vista and ubuntu installed using the vista bootloader (with the help of EasyBCD) and i was wondering if id just follow these instructions and then at Leopard in EasyBCD, or if this would mess up my ubuntu boot
(vista takes up one drive, and i was planning on installing leopard on the same drive as ubuntu)

When the “scrolling text was suppose to appear it stalled at loading HFS+ file: [System/Library/Extensions.mkext] from 4230450 then after about 20 seconds it displayed and repeated EBIOS read error something about media and repeated it 3 times, it then went to another screen saying bsd process name corresponding to current thread: unknown, mac os verson: not known yet, Kernal version: darwin kernel version 9.1.0: date made by so and so and so what do i need to do to resolve this?

hey there, thanks alot for this, i followed all the steps u said but i dont get the prompt that asks the disk number and partition number. i choose the partition i formatted by using the mouse, however, after the installation is complete, i boot into darwin and type -s but it stops at a command and the keyboard does not work all the time… please help

Hi… I downloaded the iATKOS V4i and also verified that the MD5 checksum is correct… Now, when i boot up from the DVD, i get the Darwin boot loader and after that, the white/gray background with the Apple Logo on it… The problem is, after a while i get a small “Not allowed” symbol in front of the apple logo (a small white circle with a slash scross it, like the ghost buster icon).. all this while there is small spinning “wait sign” running at the bottom… even after waiting for a long time, the screen does not progress to the next one… just remains at that white/gray bg with apple logo and the small not allowed symbol on top of it…

Your keyboard hardware may not be detected by iAtkos.. I recommend you contact the official iAtkos team at their forums.
iAtkos rarely works on hardware, the problem is compatibility (I have a website all about the latest software and technology. believe me, I know.). If it does work then your damn lucky.
That goes for everyone having some sort of problem (google iatkos official forum) search for the forum and ask the software creators theyre selfs. I only helped with the coding, the hardware is not my strong point.
If your having a problem with your BIOS (or you think you are) then check out YOUTUBE.com there is a lot of vids related to iAtkos and they might help you out ;-)!

By the way…. You can always Format your PC, install iAtkos (if you can) and then use Apple Bootcamp to Install Vista/XP (i’m not sure if you can install vista with Bootcamp) but try apples website. Search for Bootcamp and install or whatever.

sorry i have the mac os mac-os-x-10 4-tiger-on-disk-image-with-pear-pc-sak so i burn’t on dvd 8.5 gb and its done .i put this dvd in my dvdrom and i open it on the vista windows but i found nothing in the and in the same time i look to back of the dvd i see that its full :S i cant understand , may the vista doesn’t see the mac files or what

I am able to get to the boot screen where I can choose either Vista or OS X. When I choose OS X, I can then select NTFS or OS X. I select that and it looks like its going to boot into Leopard then it reboots my computer. This happens every time. Lil help….

Hello,
there is just one thing to add. After creating a new volume in Windows, “Disk Utility” does not recognize the volume. After i have formatted it to FAT32 it works.

Hello,
I need some urgent help here as I don’t get computer access easily now that my Dell m1530 keeps rebooting right before I see the Vista loading screen. I installed it using the iatkos v4i downloaded from Demonoid. And then I followed through the steps but after the step where I have to flag to 1 then type quit and enter, I instead flagged the HFS and quit. And then it tried to boot in to Mac OSX, but the screen stuck at the grey background with an apple and a spinner wheel. Then I hard shut down the computer and use the iatkos dvd to do the flagging again, this time I flagged the vista partition. So I restarted the computer, but then it goes in to ever restarting without even showing the progress bar where it says Microsoft Corporation.
I then tried the Vista installation CD but it says that this problem cannot be fixed automatically.
Please any ideas?

I installed iATKOS v1.0i on my Windows XP Laptop successfully. My laptop is:
– Intel Core2 Duo 1.66 Ghz
– RAM 1GB DDR2
– on 20GB unallocated partition
The above steps were very helpfull while installing iATKOS. But after the installation the above steps are not compatible with Windows XP.
As bcedit is not compatible with Windows XP, I add following line to the boot.ini file:
C:\chain0=”Mac OS X”
Now when I rebooted, I got two options at boot. One is Windows XP and other is Mac OS X.
Windows are working fine, but if I click to select Mac OS X at boot screen, it does not do any thing and takes me back to the same boot screen.
Does anyone from you have ever faced the same situation?
PLEASE help me on this..
I am desperate to see the Mac OS that I have installed successfully.

Hi. I installed iATKOS v1.0, did it according to the guide. I read somewhere above, someone had the same problem, but fixed it and didnt say how he fixed it. After reboot, I select the OS, I pick OSX, but it still boots into Vista. How do I fix that? Thanks

IF YOU ARE USING 2 HARD DRIVES, USE TBOOT, not chain0.
It supports multi-hard drives.
FOr the guide, replace anymention of chain0 with tboot.

Sir, i got a DVD of iATKOS_v4i__10_5_4..
when i boot with the DVD the loader says to press anykey or the F8 thing..i pressed -v and then it started loading but it freezes up and the screen shows somethings like Security system loaded and all..

hello! thanks for the detailed install guide, but somehow i got into some problem.
after hitting F8 and typed -v on the prompt, i get the scrolling texts and installation stops to respond with the last line on the scrolling text reading as:
MAC Framework successfully initialized using 16384 buffer headers and 4096 cluster IO buffer headers
Extension “com.apple.driver.ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin” has immediate dependencies…; use only one style”
How should i go about it? thanks in advance!

I have installed boot loader into my OSX Partition, installed OSX and have the dual boot screen, but I cant get teh last command “bcdedit /set {GUID} PATH \chain0” to be recognized, so I know thats where my errors are occurring. I’m on my 23rd install of this over a weeks time and have waited to ask for help thinking I was just missing something in my handling of writing the code. I’m running an Inspiron 1318 with an Intel Dual Core processor and 4 gb or ram. So far up until that one line of code mentioned above everything has worked like a dream. Any ideas on what I’m screwing up?

Okay, I got past the code issue and was able to actually boot into Leopard, gets to the White screen with the apple logo, runs for a bit and hangs… anyone have any ideas?

I’ve had the Root device not responding error for about 3 years.
Even on different PC’s…
Then the other day i solved the problem – I bought a new SATA DVD drive and it installed perfectly.
For $20 you can fix the problem! Get one!

I followed the guide, half of the HDD for Vista and half for Mac, but was not able to setup a boot option at first and start the computer in any OS.
I then re-installed Vista. It shows me only one partition :C, the partition for MAC being invisible. I can see it though if I use Disk management.
If I start from the MAC DVD, I can also see the 2 partitions, one is :C and the other I called MAC.
I redid the bcdedit commands which gave me the dual option at start-up. When I choose Vista, I boot with no problems. When I choose Mac OS X, the dual screen comes back again. I pressed the F8 key, selected the partition for Mac and pressed Enter as indicated in the guide, but I still can’t boot in Mac.
What should I do?

Hi to all that have “CHAIN BOOTING ERROR”.
I think I found a solution for this unpleasant error. In the manual, when it says “# Now Close Disk Utility and Select Utilities -> Darwin Boot. Type Y at the prompt.
# At the prompt when it asks for the Disk Number enter 0. For the Partition Number if your Leopard Partition is 2nd on the disk, then enter 2 and so on.” for the Disk Number I choose 1 instead of 0 (my only HDD). So now I can boot into Leo.
Still some instalation problems, but I hope fixable.

The Terminal window is a good substitute when “Darwin Boot” option is not present. Use fdisk like so to flag the partition you are installing OS X onto:
fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0
flag x (1, 2, etc)
update
write
quit
Also: A new NTFS partition created with Windows Disk Management and then reformatted to HFS+ with the OS X installer’s Disk Utility will work just fine. If your install cannot read the “Unallocated Space” use this method.

Hi, thanks for posting the guide, however, i was not able to load os x on my eee pc 1000h laptop.
i tried using -v, -s, after it shows a bunch of message it gets stuck to “apple.kpi components; use only one style”. so what i did, i tried to use -x and -f, what will happen, it will go to a screen where it shows you an apple logo with circling progress under it, then it’s stuck there not doing anything but to circle and circle and circle… i waited at least an hour, but it’s still not changing to a different screen.
im using iATKOS v4i. I even tried using the original os x cd version 10.5.4, but i am unable to boot it.
I desperately need your help.

After performing mac journeled partition from the dist utility with the right click on mac partition i found from information disk # is 0 and partition # is 3, in the darwin boot loader if i put disk 0 the efi system can’t perform correctly, if i put disk 1 and prtition 3 the efi emulation done perfectly. my pc support SSE2.

since i already had vista installed,
i just went to disk management to create
another partition for Mac os of 175GB.
was able to boot from my Leopard 10.5.1 dvd,
when i arrive at the installation page,i went to disk utilities
choose the partition i wanted to install onto.
clicked on erase, choose extendet journal
then erase, hoping it will partition my hardware.
it just stood there erasing for ages, i waited for like
15 minutes and still haven’t partitioned anything.
i just turned my power off,please help
i really need this to work out.
i have been trying this for ages,and still its not working.
i tried jas 10.4.8 aswell, the problem with that is, it
can’t find my hardrives at all, but i had a smile on, when i tried
leopard, cos it can find my hardrives, almost thought that was it.

You know, It was a bit confusing for me. I have an ISO file in my folder with the mac install disc in it. All i wanted to do was install that as a virtual machine. But i couldnt find a virtual machine program with MAC OS X suppout in it. PLease tell me how to do it FREE! (No scripts please) 😉

I have a question. In the step “Boot into Vista. Copy the chain0 file from the Leopard DVD to C:” So I just copy the chain0 file located in the iATKOS dvd and copy it directly to the C: drive and and not in any folder right? Sorry. I’m new to this.

Hi i got up to the step where i was in disk utility then closed it then go to utilities to darwin boot loader..thing is there was no darwin..only chameleon and some pc one which i continued to install osx and then it went to the grey screen and stayed on it after then giving me a zero with a strike through it..Now it wont boot in vista when i choose which drive to boot from it says its not there or sumthing would i like to restart and all it does if i leave it is go to the apple screen..i hope i havent damaged anything..it seems like vista has disappeared… hellppppp

hi i fallowed all direction, when i got to

I’ve been trying to install aitkos in my pc (with AMD processor) and every time i try it doesnt work…. after booting from dvd i press f8 and then -v, then i get a white screen with a gray apple logo, after that nothing happens, my pc gets stuck and it doesnt move for hours!!!! i have an asus eee top and leopard runs perfectly on that computer i even got the wifi to work and (partially) the touchscreen, i just don’t know why i can’t install it in my other pc….. i also tried to instal on another Asus and an acer and the installation failed as well… any ideas why it’s stuck on the white screen with the gray apple????

Hi!, I followed the steps on this but I got a problem now my Mac drive is being seen as NTFS instead of HFS+, even tried to install another Mac OS in Different partition but still it is being detected as NTFS and unmountable; is there a way to revert it back to HFS+ without losing my informations in the partition, i didn’t format the partition yet because it contained impt files and please tell me how to recover them thanks/

hey, on the 5th bullet under steps (above) i get about 5 or 6 lines of text then my screen goes white for a moment. after that the screen goes black and does nothing. (even after 30 min!) i followed the instructions exactly as said.

in my opinion i think that if you have a AMD processor you can not install mac as mac does not support AMD.

I did everything like I was suppose to. I can’t edit my bios setup crap. I have no options to really do anything but change system time and other simple stuff like that. I don’t know what to so. When it gets to the black load up screen it say waiting on root device. Help anyone? Got a hp pavilion slimline with a amd 64 live

if you do not have any “boot” options in your BIOS then your computer most likely has pins on the motherboard that make those changes.

you can get a patch for AMD that will allow you to use mac on pc but when i tried it, it still did not work for me.

Hello there, I get past the white text screen and when I go to select my partition in Disk Utilities my Partition won’t show up, but yet all my other disks do EVEN my USB.

yes, the scrolling text stops in my pc.

intel core 2 duo 2.52 ghz.

Hey, I started reading this and a few questions came to mind:
1.Will this work for either laptop or desktop?
2. Will leopard boot inside of a screen into windows or will it be like Linux and boot open without any relation to windows.
and last 3. is the “iATKOS v1.0” is that the leopard iso?

Hey there,
Im having problems intalling it on my Toshiba Satellite L300D.
The disk boots up fine and the scrolling text appears and runs through but after that the screen will change to smaller text and stop at the line
“com.apple.driver.ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin” nas has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components; use only one style
IOAPIC: version 0x21 vectors 0:23
and I can’t get past it. If someone could tell me how to get past the error, or if im doing something wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.

My laptop model dell vostro 3500. I try install Mac os x leopard from iAtkos DVD v. 1.0i. It install successful and show the screen restart the boot or count down 30 sec will automatic restart . When I will be restart try again setup then I Chang boot sequence as 1 st hdd or remove DVD and try restart but not comes the Mac display or other just black display and blinking curser.
